Body Painting

Brian tells us about his experience doing art with Italian children...
"On Tuesday of Week 1 I did an art class, which was great fun. We did “body painting”. In this class, the learners draw outlines of their bodies on very big sheets of paper, cut them out and paint them."

"We were having so much fun that everyone was laughing and it was difficult to trace the outlines on the paper. Some of them ended up looking like trees!"

"After we had traced the outlines we put the sheets on the big art tables and everyone helped to paint them in. The learners particularly liked drawing the designs for the shoes – Nike, Adidas, Puma etc. It was quite difficult to draw the faces but we managed in the end."

"After we had finished painting the pictures we labelled all the different parts of the body (in English of course!). We also played a game like “Simon Says”. I would say, for example, “Put your hand on your head”, but of I didn’t say “please” at the end of the command then the learners weren’t supposed to move; they were only to put move their hands if I said “please”. However, I think the learners are too accustomed to doing what the teachers tell them because they always moved their hand, even if I didn’t say “please”. Italian students are very obedient!"

"At the end of the class the learners had learned some new words like knee, elbow, hip, thumb, chin. It was a nice way to combine art with learning English."

Basketball

"Hello, I'm Babblu. I'm 15 years old and this is my third year at the English Camp. My favourite activities at the camp are the sports."
"My teachers this year are Ben, Sophia and Ian. My favourite sport is basketball."

"Basketball is better than rugby! I started playing basketball 8 years ago. "

"At the English Camp I play everyday with my friends and sometimes with Ben, too!"

Class Projects

Ian & Ben's class are working on a class project! Here's what Anna, their English Teacher has to say.

"I decided to create a magazine project with this class. Each lesson the children invent something of their own. Depending on the lesson topic, the children invent things such as a new sport, an item of clothing, or a food menu. It encourages the children to use their imagination whilst at the same time, using new vocabulary and language structures covered at the beginning of the lesson. Working on the project help to motivate the students so at the end of the camp they have something to take home."

Mad Hatters!

As part of the programme of activities, the students design and decorate a hat which they will take home at the end of camp. Read Ita's description of this activity below.

"Making hats is an opportunity for students to discuss logos and design and recognise the role they play in the modern world. Each studdent has to think about colour, form and compostition to demonstrate his/her understanding of English instructions. At the end of the lesson, each student has a beautiful personalized hat which proudly shows their own design."

Elena Traina from Anna's class describes what they did in the lesson.

Art class with Ita is interesting and fun.
First, we drew the design on a piece of paper and coloured it. Then we copied the design on to the hat with pencil.

Finally we painted the hat and decorated it with glitter.

These are our hats!
