Learning How to Blog

The posts you will see below were all created by students during their lunch. With a few simple instructions from the teacher, the children managed to create their own posts in just 20 minutes. Well done guys!

Using technology is an excellent way to motivate young learners to learn and enjoy English. It is an activity we are using more and more of each year on the English Experience Summer Camps.

Class Surveys

A great way of getting students to speak in class is by conducting class surveys. To make this even more interesting Hannah's Class their own questions and then went and asked the students in a different class.
Personalized activities are much more fun!

Make sure the English is all correct? And perfect your pronunciation, too!

Now draw up the grid and you ready to go!

Rugby!

In the second week of the English experience camp, I've begun to introduce the the kids to a variety of sports that they may not have been exposed to before... In this case, my personal favourite... RUGBY!

Picture one, We've got a passing game going on, the emphasis here is on getting the two most important parts of the game across to the students; communication and passing... That and the fact that its good fun.. especially when the rugby playing teacher is one of the first out.

I found that the kids were quick to get the hang of it and found myself having to run rather more than I had antipated, before long we had tries coming in from all angles, questionable refereeing and kids quick to point out my 'unfair' decision making.
A great laugh and a chance for the students to try their hand at something new... Plus for me it was a chance to talk about the upcoming Rugby World Cup.

Dialogues

Two students from Sophia & Ita's Class wrote and performed this original dialogue in class the other day.

Nicola Have you heard of the band Green Day?

Matthias Yes, but I don’t know much about them. Do you?

Nicola Green Day is a band with three people. Billy Joe is a singer and guitarist. They play punk-rock music. Their last album was called ‘American Idiot’. Have you heard the song ‘Wake Me Up When September Ends’?

Matthias Oh, yes.

Nicola That is my favourite song.

Matthias My favourite band is AC/DC.

Nicola Really? Why?

Matthias They play hard rock music! Their best songs are TNT, Back in Black and Thunderstruck. I really enjoy listening to their music.

The English Cafe

"Oh my Gosh, I want some of those sweets! How much are they?"

The English Cafe is a role-play class specificially designed to give learners first-hand experience at shopping in the English language. Above, you can see a "waiter" expertly pouring a glass of coke for a "customer".

Next (see below), the customer has to go to the checkout to pay. In the activity, each student is given real english money (the grand total of 40pence) with which to buy sweets, drinks or something to eat. Above, Brian, the Teacher, is explaining one of the finer points of shopping and bargaining to one of the learners.

Leaners really enjoy this activity. It is spit up into two seperate classes - Cafe language and Drama Cafe. In the first class, learners practice and do exercises on phrases, customs and vocabulary relating to visiting a cafe. They learn about what customers and waiters say. Then, in Drama Cafe, they are brought to a specially set-up room on Campus in which to practice the activity with real food and money. This activity proved to be very very popular among our students.

Web Quest

Technology is now part of our everyday lives, and for children especially has become a an almost necerssary tool for communication and learning. Many teachers are now incorporating this into lessons as a fun way of bringing the outside world into the classroom. Kate did a lesson today on culture which had the children searching for specific information online - this is also know as a 'Web Quest'. Here's what two students, Margherita Possamai and Susana Bortot, have to say about the class.

"Today, Kate divided us into three groups of four. We were each given a country and had to make a list of information we would need to make a pamphlet."

"Then we went to the computer room and surfed the net. This was very useful because we found all the information that we wanted and it was also very exciting."

"With the information we made three different pamphlets, each on a different English speaking country. They were colourful and interesting. We presented the information we found to the other members of the class. This was a great lesson!"

Olympic Games

The English Experience Olympic Games have begun! The event aren't the typical ones you might expect to see - but they are a lot of fun! These games are all about team work. The differnt groups must learn how to communicate and cooperate in order to win.

Rehersal 1

Alexandra is our Drama Coordinator this year and has come to Conegliano full of enthusiasm and motivation to help us put together our end of camp show. Here's what she has to say about the camp so far...

"The children are loving my drama lessons which involve physical and vocal warm ups, singing songs, learning dance routines, teaching their dance moves to their classmates, acting out sketches, and improving pronunciation. Their confidence is growing, they are developing their artistic and creative skills, and working as as group."

On Friday afternoon, we had our first rehersal for the show. As you will see in the video, we still have some work to do, but the children are motivated and working hard. Keep checking the blog for more updates!
